Do you remember that Disney Channel movie about the Smart house that became so smart that it ended up trapping the people living in it because it became jealous (Smart House, 1999)? What a concept! Lucky for us, the Smart Technology that exists out in the world now does not do anything like that, but it sure is up to that level of intelligence. It is amazing how something that was once considered a “Sci-Fi” movie idea has become our everyday reality.
The European Union had set a binding target of 20% energy consumption from renewable sources by the year 2020. They are also expected to have at least 10% of their transport fuels sourced from renewable energy sources by the end of the year 2020.
However, as of now, France is deemed lagging in its efforts to generate 23% of its energy from renewable sources, which it set as its national target. It was able to generate only 16.
News of security breaches has become quite common over the recent few years. While theft of credit card or personal information might be unsettling, a breach in an energy system infrastructure can be far more unsettling on the national level and have far-reaching effects. Besides, recovery from such attacks can take weeks to months.

In 2008, an alleged cyberattack shut down an oil pipeline in Turkey for three weeks.
New York City is racing to cut down the energy consumption of its aging skyscrapers. Traditional skyscrapers, with their huge glass fronts, extravagant use of air conditioning and heating, elevators, and escalators, since their beginning were never designed to be energy-friendly. While it is highly important these huge buildings reduce their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions drastically, the task is equally daunting.

Recently, Apple announced that 21 manufacturers in its supply chain have vowed to procure all their electricity through renewable and non-polluting energy sources. This will put the use of renewable energy by the company and the manufacturing supply chains at more than 40% and the total number of participating suppliers to 44 – which means that the total amount of renewable energy that will be used by the company and its suppliers by 2020 to more than five gigawatts.

Experts differ about when peak oil demand will be reached.
Global demand for oil – projected to reach about 100 million barrels per day this year, is expected to peak and then gradually diminish because of decreased automotive gasoline demand. Gasoline – refined from oil – currently accounts for about a third of global oil consumption.
In the bid to accelerate the growth of the energy storage industry and to cut the cost of deploying energy storage projects, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, during the recent Earth Week, announced to allocate $280 million. This is part of a large $400 million investment to achieve New York’s nation-leading energy storage deployment target of 3 gigawatts (GW) by 2030.
