During this year’s New York Energy Week, National Grid will host a tour of the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. Newtown Creek is the first project in the United States that directly injects renewable gas into a local distribution system by using biogas from a wastewater treatment plant. National Grid will own and maintain a system that cleans up the biogas to meet pipeline quality standards for usage down the line. The amount of renewable gas that will be produced at Newtown Creek will meet the annual demand of 2,500 Brooklyn residences and will reduce CO2 emissions by 16,000 tons annually- the equivalent of taking 3,000 cars off the road.
From the start of this project, National Grid has worked with our regulators as well as local stakeholders to assure alignment of interests. This project should be operational within the next 24 months and will hopefully stimulate the renewable industry. Our commitment to Newton Creek is consistent with our goal to deliver a low-carbon, sustainable energy future. “For more than a century National Grid has provided the local Brooklyn community with clean burning economical natural gas. We are committed to delivering a low-carbon, sustainable energy future and we are proud to partner with DEP in this first-of-its kind project to demonstrate that renewable gas is a viable option to achieve this vision,” National Grid New York President Ken Daly. “We are doing our part to help develop environmentally friendly energy technologies to minimize the effects of climate change on our communities.”
We look forward to showing you the innovative Newtown Creek facilities on Friday, June 20th along with the MIT Alumni Club of New York.
