A pair of trains that are among the first in the world to run on hydrogen have started running in Germany. The first of its kind train has shown the world that sustainable rail travel is possible. It is an eco-friendly alternative to diesel locomotives that cough out harmful pollutants into the atmosphere.
The ‘sustainable’, hydrogen – powered trains are running along a 62-mile corridor between towns in Lower Saxony in the northern part of Germany.
Aviation sector guzzles a whopping 5m barrels of oil every day, contributing to around 3% of the total carbon emissions and more than 2% to total global emissions. [s1] By 2020, emissions from global international aviations are projected to be around 70% higher than in 2005.
To address this issue, ICAO, in a meeting held in June gave its consent to a new set of standards to curb greenhouse gas emissions by the aviation sector.

Despite President Trump’s order to rescue the nation’s struggling coal power plants, utilities are considering the shutdown of unprofitable units. Since the year 2000, U.S. utility companies have announced closure of more than 200 coal-fired units. For example, Michigan-based CMS Energy Corp. announced on June 13 that it was shutting down two coal-fired power plants. Likewise, utility giants Southern Co. and Dominion Energy Inc. are planning for the future shutdown.
