Addressing a common criticism of New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision, Public Service Commission chairwoman Audrey Zibelman said Monday that the state had made significant, tangible progress in its quest to redesign how power is delivered and consumed.

A quick look across the energy landscape shows we’re in a period of exciting innovation. How people think about and use electricity is changing as quickly as the technology that generates and delivers it. Here in New York, the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) is at the heart of those changes: meeting consumers’ power needs, addressing public policy goals, and sustaining electricity’s fundamental contributions to economic vitality.
Changing resource mix, state-federal jurisdictional overlap, cybersecurity, debates over the efficiency of markets: these are only some of the issues that ISOs and RTOs are addressing today.
During the last two decades, organized wholesale electricity markets have expanded their footprints and now cover large parts in the U.S., serving two-thirds of electricity consumers in the United States.
Gone are the days when solar panels were so expensive that you would only see them on the rooftops of wealthy people who wanted their houses to look like they were from the future. Incredible advancements in technology and production processes have brought the price of the panels down. As the total capacity of solar photovoltaic panels has increased from less than 10 MW in 1976 to more than 100 GW in 2012, their price per Watt has plummeted from almost $100 to less than a dollar.
