In order to meet the energy demands of the 21st century, more choice, better reliability, fast and seamless delivery and high quality power is required. And this all has to be delivered in a cost conscious manner. National Grid has developed an approach to achieve these goals that we call “Connect21”. Connect21 is a framework that links customer needs and policy goals with technology and market solutions. Beyond meeting our customers’ needs, we must outfit the grid with the technology needed to prepare for extreme weather resulting from climate change. Superstorm Sandy caused 8.5 million outages across the eastern seaboard, walloping New York City in its wake. Connect21 emphasizes the need for a resilient energy backbone for our communities, information for our customers to drive energy choices, and customized solutions to provide the highest level of service.
National Grid is partnering with our stakeholders across New York State to deliver 21st century energy solutions. In concert with our Connect21 framework, we are encouraged by the Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) proceeding from the NY Public Service Commission.
Along with the Newtown Creek biogas project (featured on the NY Energy Week blog here), National Grid is prioritizing gas conversions on Long Island which lead to greater efficiency and environmental benefits. To improve information about energy choices, we are implementing the Clean Heat Initiative which converts customers from dirtier fuel oil sources to cleaner natural gas. In Upstate New York, we are working with Clarkson University to construct a resilient micro-grid, able to sustain critical facilities for up to two weeks during an outage.
