As is true of all NYEW meet-ups, this event boasted a healthy balance of professionals from a range of industries including energy, real estate, and finance. Each attendee had a central interest in being part of the larger conversation within the energy industry and between its many neighbors. One of the unfortunate, and yet frequent, pitfalls of most industry events is that all of the people attending the event have similar background and similar goals. What makes NYEW meet-ups different is that it brings together energy professionals with non-energy professionals in a productive forum. There isn’t much business that one energy efficiency business-person can do with another one, but put them each touch with someone in Real Estate, finance, manufacturing, government, or transportation, and that’s where business happens.
The event was starlit by two guest speakers who discussed energy efficiency in the built environment from equally unique perspectives. Kristin Barbato, VP of Customer Energy Solutions with NYPA, discussed the significant changes that have taken place in-front of the meter over the course of her career as one of New York City’s most notable, accomplished, and well respected energy authorities. Kristin led a lively discussion on the key pillars of REV, how the utility’s relationship to the customer is change, and what’s happening in between.
Following Kristin’s group discussion, Evan Kostas of Enertiv introduced the attendees to one of the most pivotal new technologies to hit the facility energy management market in some time. Enertiv has designed and rolled-out a brand new way of monitoring and collecting data on a building’s energy use to provide a whole new level of resolution and understanding within a building. By tapping directly into the circuit breakers, Enertiv is able to provide granular energy use information on an equipment or appliance level. Coupled with Enertiv’s hardware is a suite of elegant software dashboards meant to help interpret the gobs of data collected on a building or portfolio level. Enertiv’s clients include notables such as Capital One, NYU, and Stamford Public Schools.
For those of us in the energy management, Enertiv’s technology is a refreshing new opportunity to collect usage data at a higher resolution. Couple the Enertiv platform with the right Energy Management partner to interpret and provide solutions to problems revealed by that data and the whole energy management game will leapfrog to a smarter, more strategic future. Fast.
