After Superstorm Sandy stranded thousands without power, Governor Cuomo committed to strengthening the State’s energy infrastructure and transforming it into a more resilient, clean, cost-effective and dynamic system. As part of the effort to reengineer the State’s energy system, the Governor has called for innovative solutions to modernize the power grid.
New York policy makers and energy industry stakeholders are working collaboratively to build a world-class energy system. The State is supporting greater use of renewable energy, microgrids and energy storage to strengthen system security and improve reliability. Through efforts such as the NY-Sun, NYPrize and the New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium (NY-BEST), the State is accelerating the development of innovative technologies and initiatives. By building a smarter grid and encouraging clean, distributed renewable energy generation, New Yorkers will experience fewer outages and faster recovery after outages.
Recently, the Public Service Commission opened a public proceeding called “REV” (Reforming the Energy Vision) that aims to encourage system efficiency by developing new incentives to move our grid from the 20th century to the 21st, with initiatives that change the way electricity is distributed and used in New York State and implement regulatory practices that promote more efficient use of energy, deeper penetration of renewables and wider deployment of distributed energy resources.
New York will continue to aggressively pursue policies and actions that will ensure its ability to meet the energy demands of today and those of future generations.
